Pozhichalur Protests Against Airport Expansion (2006–2007)

Until 16 March 2006, the 25,000 residents of Pozhichalur—including 5,000 families—were unaware that politics, bureaucracy, and the might of the so-called democratic government could threaten their right to live, simply by issuing a government order.
Newspapers reported on 16 March 2006 that the Chennai Airport expansion plan would result in the eviction of many from Pozhichalur and nearby areas. A government order (G.O.) had already been passed in December 2005—without public awareness—declaring that 144.92 acres, including colonies, industries, temples, churches, and water bodies, would be acquired.
Devotees of Lord Hanuman, who were also committed social activists, rose in protest. Though the government cited national interest, the locals believed it served only a few elite beneficiaries. The protest was peaceful, fortified by prayer and spiritual strength.
Ultimately, on 21 June 2007, the government withdrew the expansion plan and revoked the G.O. The devotees attribute this reversal to divine intervention by Lord Hanuman.
